Flanges for data center projects in Bihar
Bihar is preparing for its first large data centers, with surplus power, a state IT policy and sites around Patna and Gaya. Here is what its heat, floods, seismic zones and wastewater-fed cooling mean for the piping and its flanges.

For data centers in Bihar we supply ASME B16.5 Class 150 carbon steel flanges in A105 for chilled water and condenser water, 316L stainless flanges, pickled and passivated, for CDUs and technology cooling loops and for stainless parts in contact with treated wastewater, and blind flanges for the later phases of a campus. Every heat comes with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate, and orders go by road from our works in Gujarat to Patna, Gaya or your contractor's yard.
The Bihar data center market
Bihar has little data center capacity so far, but the state is preparing for it. Its IT Policy 2024 covers data centers alongside IT and electronics, with a capital subsidy of up to 30% of fixed capital investment, capped at Rs 30 crore, and a 25% energy bill subsidy for five years (KNN India). In July 2026 a policy brief from One Trillion Bihar, an independent research initiative developed with the Confederation of Indian Industry and Energiva Ventures, set out a roadmap of about 50 MW of data center capacity by 2030, 200 MW by 2035 and 800 MW by 2047 (Down To Earth).
The brief's case rests on power. Bihar's surplus averaged about 455 MW of spare capacity in 2022-23, enough for nine to twelve mid-sized data centers without new generation, at industrial tariffs it puts 25 to 30% below Mumbai's. It names Gaya as the preferred first location because of its lower seismic risk, Patna as suitable with earthquake-resistant design, and Muzaffarpur only for edge and disaster recovery sites because of seismic and flood risk. And it recommends that data centers use closed-loop cooling supplied with treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants rather than groundwater.
Climate and what it means for the piping
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Hottest month, average daily high | 37.4 °C (May) |
| Record high | 46.6 °C |
| Record low | 1.1 °C |
| Annual rainfall | 1,146 mm, 87% of it from June to September |
Patna has a hot, humid summer and a monsoon that brings most of its rain. The average daily high peaks at 37.4 °C in May and the record high is 46.6 °C; the record low, 1.1 °C, is far above the -29 °C (-20 °F) to which ASME B16.5 rates A105 flanges, so no low-temperature grade is needed. About 87% of the 1,146 mm of rain falls from June to September, so chilled water flanges need insulation with a continuous vapor barrier.
Bihar is India's most flood-prone state: about 73% of its area is flood-affected. Keep plant rooms, pump houses and pipe racks above the design flood level, store flanges dry and covered on site through the monsoon, and paint carbon steel flanges with the pipe after installation. Where the brief's earthquake-resistant design applies, the piping is braced and flexible connectors at building joints and equipment are usually flanged, so their flanges belong in the same order.
Cooling on treated wastewater changes the water, not the flange class. Make-up water from a sewage treatment plant carries more chlorides and solids than municipal water, so the water treatment program protects carbon steel condenser water piping, and stainless parts in contact with it are better in 316L than in 304L.
Flange specification for Bihar projects
| System | Flange | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling towers and condenser water | A105, ASME B16.5 Class 150, weld neck or slip-on; flat face at cast iron pumps and FRP towers | Treated wastewater make-up: 316L for stainless parts |
| Chilled water plant and facility water | A105, Class 150 RF; blind flanges on header ends for later phases | Insulated with a vapor barrier for monsoon humidity |
| Flexible connectors at building joints | Flanged connectors with Class 150 flanges | Ordered with the seismic bracing |
| CDUs and technology cooling system | 316L, Class 150, weld neck or lap joint with stub end, pickled and passivated, 100% PMI | Same grade as the pipe; no slip-ons on the TCS |
Every flange is stamped with its grade, size, class and lot number and ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. Send us your line list and we quote each line as specified.
Getting flanges to Bihar
Flanges go by road from our works in Umbergaon, Gujarat, to the site in Patna or Gaya or to your contractor's yard, with every line marked and certified to your line list. Through the monsoon, ask for flanges to be delivered just ahead of installation and stored under cover.
Domestic orders are invoiced with GST and travel with an e-way bill. Your engineer or third-party inspector is welcome at the works before dispatch. Supplying data center projects in India covers standards, inspection and ordering.
Flanges for other Indian data center markets: Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bihar a data center market yet?
An early one. The July 2026 One Trillion Bihar policy brief maps a path to about 50 MW by 2030 and 200 MW by 2035, built on the state's power surplus and its IT Policy 2024 incentives, with Patna and Gaya as the first sites.
Which flanges suit cooling water made from treated wastewater?
The same class as any data center, ASME B16.5 Class 150. The water treatment program protects carbon steel condenser water flanges; for stainless parts in contact with the water, choose 316L over 304L for its better resistance to chlorides, and check gaskets with the water treatment supplier.
Do you deliver to Patna and Gaya?
Yes. Orders go by road from our works in Gujarat with a GST invoice and an e-way bill, and small mixed orders of a few pieces per size are welcome.
